For pet food again, lakes are preferred because of the presence of proteins. They are also more stable colorants in semi-moist foods. Still, water soluble dyes are quite popular for their ease of use. They are often used in dry powdered form in dull shades. For gravies etc, soluble liquids are also used.
Dyes and lakes are all food grade, the same as used for human food products.
